Who is the peacemaker in the iroquois
The Peacemaker agreed to the test. He climbed the tree. The tree was cut down. The Peacemaker fell into the water and disappeared over the falls. The Mohawks waited and waited, but there was no sign of the visitor emerging from the water. The Mohawks were disappointed and went back to their village. The next morning, a thin wisp of white smoke was seen in the distance.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the Peacemaker had made this campfire and that he was alive and well. He was waiting to be invited to enter the village. It was in that village that he met Ayonwatha, the one who would travel with him to convince the five nations to stop fighting and to unify.
It took many years, but eventually, the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca Nations unified and formed a peace league. Longhouse is also a metaphor for the social, political and spiritual structure that was put into place by the Peacemaker. The Peacemaker put into place a constitution called The Great Law. It is not surprising that many of the ideals, symbols and some of the structure of the Great Law were borrowed and incorporated into what was to become the Constitution of the United States of America.
The Peacemaker remembered that Jigonsaseh was the first individual to accept The Great Law and so Clan Mothers were appointed and given the responsibility to nominate new Chiefs whenever a former Chief passed away. The women assist the Chiefs and warn them to change their ways if they forget to consider the welfare of the people they represent.
The women can remove a Chief from office if he does not heed the three warnings that the women send if a Chief is not fulfilling his duties. The Clan Mothers keep track of the names of the children. Symbols of the Haudenosaunee. The Peacemaker knew that the people had been fighting for a long time. He knew that it would be difficult for the people to remember how this new policy of peace would work and so he provided symbols to help the people understand this new system.
The Hiawatha Belt. The Peacemaker was born on the northern shores of Lake Ontario. There he was raised by his mother and grandmother. Right away, they knew that this young person was special. He always talked of peace and that he was given a powerful message by the Creator. When he was ready, the Peacemaker told his mother and grandmother that he was off to bring peace to the warring people. To travel there, the Peacemaker carved a canoe made entirely out of white stone!
This amazing canoe would help convince the people of the powerful message of peace the Creator was sending to the five nations. He said his goodbyes, and then started his journey across the big lake in the stone white canoe. In searching for these people, the Peacemaker came upon a woman. This woman had no alliances but did provide shelter and food and promoted the continuation of the fighting between us.
The Peacemaker told her about the message of peace and that her actions were promoting war and saddening the Creator. She was the first to accept the great peace and change her ways. Because of this, the Peacemaker set aside a special duty for the women of the five nations. They will have the duty of Clan Mother. The Clan Mother will watch over the members of her clan and counsel them in a peaceful way. The Clan Mother will also have the important duty of selecting the next leader of their clan to keep the great peace continuing on.
The Peacemaker started with the eastern most nation, the Mohawks. In order for his plan to succeed, the Peacemaker sought after the most feared leaders. However, Wampum was used as an exchange tool.
The Peacemaker asked Ayonwatha to be his spokesperson and together they traveled to spread the message of peace. His travels brought him to the Onondaga Nation, where he met with a lot of resistance from the evil Tadodarho.
Tadodarho was an evil man and is described as having snakes in his head and a crooked body. This symbolized a very evil person and because of his evil deeds it reflected on him. Tadodarho would not give in to the many attempts by the Peacemaker to get him to accept the peace. The Peacemaker and Ayonwatha moved on to the other Nations and were successful in convincing them to accept the peace.
He then gathered the forty-nine men whom he had convinced to accept the peace to converge back to the center and there they all worked together on the evil mind of Tadodarho of the Onondaga Nation. They tried many times in many ways to convince him that peace was the only way, and many times they failed. The song kept in focus with the one purpose of winning over the evil mind of Tadodarho. Once Tadodarho's mind was pacified, his body straightened and the snakes were combed from his hair.
The Peacemaker offered him a special position in the Confederacy. That position was to watch over the Fire on behalf of all the 5 Nations. The offer appealed to him and he accepted. He agreed to live in peace and tend the fire to make sure that it would burn forever.
After successfully winning over Tadodarho, the Peacemaker then looked upon the men and saw that they still carried their weapons. He then said that they needed a symbol that would remind them of the promise made to each other, the promise of peace. As he looked around, he saw this very tall tree.
He thought that because the tree was so tall, it could be seen from distant places, and because the top of the tree pierced the sky, attention would be drawn to it. On the branches of this very tall tree, the needles are in clusters of five. He used this as a symbol of the Five Nations being bound together as one. He took some needles off the branch and told them that even with the changes of the seasons, the tree stays green for all time.
So shall the Great Peace stay among the Five Nations, for all time. He then uprooted the tree and it created a cavity. He instructed the men to cast down their weapons of war into the cavity to bury their greed, hatred and jealousy. The tree was then replaced and the Peacemaker then said:.
We bury them from sight forever and plant again the tree.
