What is the difference between sisterlocks and micro locks
Sisterlocks may not be a great style for people with fine, straight hair; the weaving technique used requires a bit of curl in your hair to come out perfectly.
Also, if your hair is damaged, specifically weak and thinning, this may not be the best time to install sisterlocks. Microlocs, on the other hand, take a shorter time to install. How long will depend on the locking method used but ideally, anywhere from 6 to 20 hours if done professionally. If self-installing, it can go up to a week! Microlocs installation can be started by either braiding, coiling, interlocking or twisting.
As mentioned, sisterlocks can only be re-tightened by certified stylists because of the intricate style of weaving and the fact that it can only be done using a specific tool.
The tools are given to consultants and trainees upon completion of the course. For microlocs, you can either use a micro hook or even yarn needles to maintain your microlocs. Maintainance for both takes pretty much the same time, but for sisterlocks, you check in for re-tightening every weeks, while for microlocs, you visit your loctician every weeks. To cut down on the maintenance cost of your sisterlocks, you can opt to take a re-tightening class with your consultant but only six months into your Sisterlock journey.
Sisterlocks and microlocs are both great hairstyles when well and consistently maintained. They both look great on different hair textures, and you can get as creative as possible with each of these styles. The best way to find out which one is best for you is to do your research like you are doing now in this post. September 2, at am. I did my own microlocs doing the 2 steand twist method. I have about to locs installed. My question is, once my hair start locking, and I may want to split some of my locs. I know some shed hair will vome out, once I split the loc, can I add the shed hair to the locs Im splitting by using that pointy crochet needle?
Peace Temick! I definitely would not suggest splitting the twists. Two strand twists are meant to stay together when starting locs. With that said, I would not recommend attempting to crochet into the twists and shed hair.
Over time the newly formed locs will catch the hair that is meant to stay in there. Wishing you all the best on your new journey! October 5, at am. Retwisting and Interlocking lock the hair differently. October 8, at am.

Thank you for reaching out and I am happy you were inspired to begin your journey with microlocs!
To answer your question, yes there is absolutely a threshold of locs that are the right size and locs that are too small. If locs are started too small for the texture of hair they can cause thinning and breakage. I hope that helps! This is when you will see which pattern works best on your hair type. Sisterlocks have a defined a grid pattern and interlocking technique which should be followed when installing.
They are created using a special interlocking tool, that builds the locks from the ends of the hair to the root. The technique does not require the use of hair styling products like oils, waxes and gels. The installation time can be between 24 to 36 hours or more.
How well your locks mature depends on how well you take care of your locks after installation and the texture of your hair. It may take up to 6 months.
Sisterlocks require maintenance after weeks using the sisterlock interlocking method. It is recommended to not go longer than 2 months without retightening because it would leave your locks vulnerable to thinning and breakage. A post shared by The Mrs. Microlocs are locks smaller than traditional locks. The average size of mature traditional dreadlocks is the diameter of a pencil. This means microlocs are locks whose sizes are smaller than that of a pencil. Installation of microlocs is similar to that of traditional locks.
First, it starts with a twist, braid or coil then wax or balm is topically applied to facilitate locking. Creation of microlocs can be done without any formal training. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you may need to maintain your locks after every weeks to keep the roots tightened.
